Spaghetti aux tomates et burrata – simplitatea italiana in cea mai delicioasa forma.

Bucataria impresioneaza, serviciul dezamageste. Un contrast care te face sa apreciezi si mai mult acele restaurante in care gustul si ospitalitatea merg mana in mana.

English version
Côté Sud Menton – Refined Taste, Incomplete Experience
Menton has a special kind of charm — a discreet elegance between the sea and the mountains, where French cuisine takes on strong Mediterranean accents. Here we discovered Côté Sud, a restaurant with a solid reputation and dishes that promise a true journey of flavors. Unfortunately, there were also aspects that led this article to be titled: Côté Sud Menton – Refined taste, incomplete experience.
At Côté Sud, everything is about the joy of authentic flavor. The cuisine perfectly combines the aromas of the South, the freshness of the Mediterranean, and the refined elegance of France. Each plate speaks of respect for ingredients, for the seasons, and for the art of cooking with heart.
Carefully selected meats, fresh fish, fine cheeses, and seasonal vegetables are transformed into dishes that maintain the perfect balance between tradition and creativity. The scent of freshly baked pizzas, made with natural sourdough and quality ingredients, completes the perfect picture of a “Menton-style” dinner — simple, authentic, and full of flavor.
And yes, the food was excellent. Carefully presented dishes, clean flavors, a balance between refinement and freshness. Every plate felt like a true Italian love letter to the South of France.
We were greeted with a complimentary serving of “deconstructed” bruschetta — an interesting take, quite different from the traditional versions.
Then, we decided to make a mix of flavors, eager to try a bit of everything.
We started with Moules au Vermentino blanc et tomates cerise — Mediterranean indulgence in its purest form. Fresh mussels open in the steam of Vermentino white wine, leaving behind a delicate, aromatic sauce where the sweetness of cherry tomatoes and the fragrance of Provençal herbs melt together. Each bite is a meeting between sea and sun, freshness and delicacy — the taste of summer served in a bowl.
They were perfectly complemented by a Focaccia Sésame — golden, fluffy, and slightly crisp at the edges, covered with a generous layer of sesame seeds that give it a roasted aroma and irresistible texture. Each bite brings the warm taste of slow-risen dough, good olive oil, and that unmistakable scent of fresh bread just out of the oven. Simple, yet full of personality — the kind of focaccia that needs nothing more than a drop of oil and a glass of white wine.
Pizza Gorgo e Noci — a surprisingly refined combination of the creamy intensity of gorgonzola and the sweet crunch of roasted walnuts. The thin, perfectly baked crust becomes a stage where the rich blue cheese melts harmoniously with the fine texture of the nuts and a subtle hint of honey. A pizza that doesn’t chase classic perfection, but rather the charm of contrast — a dance between bold and delicate, between traditional Italy and a touch of gourmet daring.
Spaghetti de Kamut aux palourdes et boutargue — a dish that speaks of Mediterranean sophistication. The kamut wheat pasta, with its silky texture and light nutty flavor, intertwines with the tenderness of palourde clams and the salty, elegant notes of bottarga — dried fish roe. Every forkful is an explosion of sea, sun, and Italian tradition reinterpreted with grace. A dish that is not only tasted but lived — elegant, simple, and memorable.
Spaghetti aux tomates et burrata — Italian simplicity at its most delicious. Al dente pasta coated in a sauce of sweet, fragrant tomatoes, a hint of basil and good olive oil, topped with creamy burrata that adds smoothness and balance. Every bite tells a story of summer, light, and the joy of pure flavor.
I wish I could end the article here — on a note as bright as the dishes themselves — but unfortunately, the service didn’t live up to the same standard. First, the absence of several wines from the menu — a disappointment in a place that prides itself on both Italian and French cuisine. Choosing wine became a small adventure, with repeated replies of “Sorry, we don’t have that anymore.” Then, the initially relaxed atmosphere shifted subtly but noticeably into a feeling of “it’s time to go.” The waiters began clearing the table while we were still enjoying our wine — a gesture that cut into the charm of the evening.
And perhaps the most unpleasant detail: on the bill, a surprise — €4.50 for ice. A small detail, but enough to leave a bitter taste after an otherwise excellent meal.
Côté Sud remains a place worth visiting for the food — but not necessarily for the full experience. The cuisine impresses; the service disappoints. A contrast that makes you appreciate even more those restaurants where flavor and hospitality walk hand in hand.
