Daca in inima Romaniei am ajuns intr-un loc de basm: Timian – ferma capritelor (despre care gasiti detalii aici si aici), la doar cativa kilometri de centrul orasului Maribor, pe colinele line ale zonei Meljski hrib, am descoperit un loc care pare desprins dintr-o alta poveste: Hotel Frost. Aici, natura se intinde in toate directiile, aerul e curat, iar dimineata incepe cu sunetul bland al cailor din grajdul de langa hotel. O experienta foarte reusita pentru care cuvintele din acest articol: Hotel Frost Maribor – Liniste, cai si aer de poveste sunt prea putine, iar imaginile parca nu surprind intru totul atmosfera locului.

Frost nu este doar un loc de cazare – este o experienta rustica reinterpretata in cheie moderna. Camerele sunt luminoase, spatioase, decorate simplu, dar cu bun gust, iar ferestrele mari lasa lumina sa se joace cu tonurile calde ale lemnului.

De pe terasa, privelistea se deschide spre dealuri verzi si paduri care par ca se topesc in linistea orasului aflat mai jos.

Am ajuns pe inserat, cand lumina calda se topea peste dealuri, asa ca am decis sa ramanem pe loc si sa transformam seara intr-un moment lent si savuros. Am ales un platou generos cu mezeluri si branzeturi locale, plin de arome autentice, pe care l-am insotit cu un Sauvignon din productia proprie a fermei – proaspat, parfumat, exact cat trebuie. O combinatie simpla, dar teribil de inspirata, care a pus perfect in valoare farmecul locului.

Dar ce era mai interesant abia acum urma sa descoperim!

Camera 206 este mai mult decat o simpla camera – e o experienta in sine. In mijlocul ei, o cada eleganta te invita la relaxare totala, iar privelistea din fata ta iti taie rasuflarea: orasul Maribor se intinde la poalele dealurilor, luminile lui se aprind una cate una, ca intr-un spectacol privat.

E genul acela de moment in care timpul pare sa incetineasca, iar tot ce conteaza este aburul vinului alb din pahar, apa calda si panorama care iti spune ca viata are gust atunci cand stii sa o savurezi.

Rasaritul din camera 206 de la Hotel Frost este o experienta care iti ramane in memorie. Din cada eleganta, privind prin geamul generos, soarele se ridica incet peste colinele din jur si orasul Maribor se trezeste la viata.

Lumina calda mangaie acoperisurile, dealurile verzi si caii care pasc linistit, transformand fiecare clipa intr-un tablou viu, care combina linistea diminetii cu energia unui nou inceput.

E momentul in care simti ca timpul incetineste, iar fiecare respiratie se umple de frumusete si prospetime.

Micul dejun este servit à la carte, cu un meniu care te provoaca sa alegi intre atatea bunatati incat ai vrea sa le incerci pe toate.

Poti combina doua optiuni dintre platourile cu mezeluri fine sau branzeturi locale, fulgii de ovaz sau muesli, carnaciorii calzi, fructele cu iaurt, clatitele pufoase ori ouale pregatite dupa pofta inimii – prajite, amestecate sau gatite cu sunca, branza, bacon ori legume. Totul completat de toast crocant cu sunca si/sau branza.

La capitolul bauturi, micul dejun vine cu tot ce-ti trebuie pentru un inceput de zi placut: cafea aromata, ceaiuri parfumate sau cacao catifelata, alaturi de sucuri racoritoare de mere ori de piersici si, desigur, apa servita simplu, cu eleganta.

Un mic dejun savuros, perfect pentru a incepe ziua in ritmul lin al colinelor din Maribor. Totul servit cu zambet si cu sentimentul ca esti oaspetele unei familii, nu al unui hotel.

Pentru seara cu numarul doi am experimentat Camera 102, care nu are cada, insa acel farmec calm care te cucereste fara efort. Cu balconul deschis spre terenul de echitatie si colinele care inconjoara proprietatea, camera pare un mic refugiu intre cer si pamant. Dimineata, lumina se strecoara bland printre jaluzele, iar in departare se aud caii – un sunet care iti aduce instant zambetul pe buze. E locul perfect pentru o cafea savurata in tacere, privind cum ziua prinde viata peste Mariborul linistit si verde.

De pe terasa camerei am savurat un Frost Rosé Charmat, un vin care surprinde prin prospetime si echilibru, un rosé cu suflet jucaus si note fine de vara. Culoarea sa trandafirie, luminoasa, anunta arome delicate de capsuni, zmeura si flori de camp, completate de o efervescenta discreta care mangaie palatul. Gustul este curat, racoritor, cu o aciditate fina si un final usor fructat, perfect pentru o dupa-amiaza lenesa pe terasa sau pentru a insoti un platou de branzeturi locale. Un vin care nu se ia prea in serios, dar care reuseste sa-ti aduca instant zambetul pe buze – elegant, proaspat si cu un farmec autentic slovene.

Micul dejun de la Frost are un farmec aparte – chiar daca ingredientele sunt, in mare, aceleasi in fiecare dimineata, felul in care sunt aranjate in farfurie transforma totul intr-o experienta noua. Fiecare zi aduce un plating diferit, atent si elegant, cu mici detalii care fac diferenta: o felie de fruct asezata artistic, o branza taiata altfel, un strop de culoare dintr-o verdeata proaspata.

E genul acela de mic dejun care iti arata ca si simplitatea poate fi un rasfat – atunci cand e pusa in scena cu gust si inspiratie.

Iar daca esti gurmand, zona Mariborului te rasplateste cu vinuri excelente si restaurante care imbina traditia slovena cu influentele mediteraneene.

Cafenelele din Maribor sunt mici refugii pline de farmec, imprastiate prin centrul vechi si pe malul raului Drava. Fiecare are personalitatea ei – unele boeme, cu mobilier vintage si arome de cafea proaspat macinata, altele moderne, cu prajituri artizanale si latte-uri desenate cu precizie.

Aici, timpul pare sa incetineasca, iar o ceasca de espresso devine pretextul perfect sa privesti orasul cum pulseaza lin, intre dealuri si poduri vechi.

In Maribor, un desert emblematic care reflecta traditia culinara slovena este Prekmurska gibanica. Aceasta prajitura stratificata, protejata la nivel european ca „Specialitate Traditional Garantata”, provine din regiunea Prekmurje si este considerata un simbol al ospitalitatii slovene.

Prekmurska gibanica este alcatuita din mai multe straturi de aluat subtire, intre care se afla umpluturi delicioase de mac macinat, branza de vaci (sau ricotta), nuci macinate si mere rase. Fiecare strat este imbogatit cu unt sau smantana, iar combinatia acestora creeaza o textura bogata si un gust complex. Desi originara din estul Sloveniei, aceasta prajitura este apreciata in intreaga tara si poate fi savurata in diverse cafenele si patiserii din Maribor. Asa ca, daca tot ai ajuns in Maribor, nu rata ocazia de a gusta Prekmurska gibanica – un desert care imbina traditia cu savoarea autentica a regiunii.

In inima orasului Maribor creste o legenda vie: cea mai veche vita de vie din lume, care are peste 400 de ani si inca rodește. Plantata pe malul raului Drava, in fata casei cunoscute astazi drept Old Vine House, aceasta vie este simbolul orasului si al pasiunii slovene pentru vin. Din strugurii ei se produce anual o cantitate mica de vin rosu, pastrat cu sfintenie – o poveste lichida despre traditie, rabdare si bucuria de a trai in ritmul naturii.

Pentru cei care iubesc pur si simplu natura, pot face o plimbare printre cai, o tura cu bicicleta sau pur si simplu sa stea pe terasa, ascultand linistea.

Iar cum o experienta savuroasa merita prelungita, nu am plecat cu mainile goale. Am luat cu noi o parte din bunatatile casei: cateva sticle de vin, ulei aromat din seminte de dovleac si, bineinteles, o mostra din Ciril – palinca de pere fina, cu arome catifelate, distinsa cu argint la London Spirits Awards 2024. Un strop de Slovenia autentica, perfect de savurat acasa, intr-o seara linistita, ca sa-ti amintesti gustul locului.

Gazdele de la Frost au fost exact asa cum ti-ai dori sa fie intr-un loc care respira ospitalitate: calde, generoase si mereu atente la detalii. Ne-au intampinat cu zambet si ne-au facut sa ne simtim ca intre prieteni vechi, nu ca simpli oaspeti. Iar la plecare, gestul lor ne-a emotionat – o miniatura de Ciril, pentru colectia noastra de suveniruri, si o sticla de vin oferita „pentru sofer”, de savurat in liniste, acasa. O atentie simpla, dar plina de suflet, care spune totul despre spiritul locului.

Hotel Frost este genul acela de loc pe care il simti – nu doar il vezi. Linistea, aerul curat si legatura cu natura creeaza o experienta completa, in care confortul modern se intalneste cu autenticitatea vietii la tara.

Hotel Frost Maribor – Serenity, Horses and Storybook Air

If in the heart of Romania we found a fairytale place, Timian – the goat farm (you can read more about it here and here), then just a few kilometers from the center of Maribor, on the gentle hills of the Meljski hrib area, we discovered another storybook destination: Hotel Frost.

Here, nature stretches in every direction, the air is crisp, and mornings begin with the soft sound of horses from the stable next door. It was such a beautiful experience that the words in this article, Hotel Frost Maribor – Serenity, Horses and Storybook Air, feel too few, and even the photos can’t fully capture the atmosphere of the place.

Frost isn’t just a place to stay – it’s a rustic experience reimagined through a modern lens. The rooms are bright, spacious, and tastefully decorated, with large windows letting the light dance on warm wooden tones.

From the terrace, the view opens up over rolling green hills and forests that seem to melt into the quiet of the city below.

We arrived at sunset, when the golden light faded over the hills, so we decided to stay in and turn the evening into a slow, delicious moment. We chose a generous platter of local cheeses and cured meats, full of authentic flavors, paired with a Sauvignon Blanc from the farm’s own production – fresh, fragrant, and perfectly balanced. A simple but inspired combination that matched the charm of the place perfectly.

But the most interesting part was yet to come.

Room 206 is more than just a room – it’s an experience in itself. In the middle of it, an elegant bathtub invites you to complete relaxation, while in front of you, the view takes your breath away: the city of Maribor unfolds at the foot of the hills, its lights flickering one by one like a private show.

It’s one of those moments when time seems to slow down, and all that matters is the steam from your wine glass, the warmth of the water, and the panorama reminding you that life tastes better when you take time to savor it.

The sunrise from Room 206 at Hotel Frost is something you won’t forget. From the elegant bathtub, through the wide window, you can watch the sun rise slowly over the surrounding hills as Maribor awakens.

The warm light caresses the rooftops, the green slopes, and the horses grazing peacefully, turning every second into a living painting that blends the calm of morning with the energy of a new beginning.

It’s the kind of moment when time pauses, and every breath feels filled with beauty and freshness.

Breakfast is served à la carte, with a menu so tempting that you’ll wish you could try everything.

You can mix and match from platters of fine cold cuts and local cheeses, oatmeal or muesli, warm sausages, fruit with yogurt, fluffy pancakes, or eggs cooked however you like – fried, scrambled, or with ham, cheese, bacon, or vegetables – all completed with crispy toast topped with ham and/or cheese.

As for drinks, breakfast includes everything you need for a pleasant start to the day: aromatic coffee, fragrant teas, or silky cocoa, alongside refreshing apple or peach juice and, of course, water served simply and elegantly.

A delicious breakfast, perfect for starting the day in rhythm with Maribor’s gentle hills – all served with a smile and the feeling that you’re the guest of a family, not a hotel.

For the second night, we stayed in Room 102, which doesn’t have a bathtub but carries the same quiet charm that wins you over effortlessly. With a balcony overlooking the riding arena and the surrounding hills, the room feels like a small refuge between earth and sky. In the morning, light gently filters through the blinds, and in the distance, you can hear the horses – a sound that instantly brings a smile. It’s the perfect spot for a quiet coffee while watching the city of Maribor wake up.

From the room’s terrace, we enjoyed a Frost Rosé Charmat, a wine that delights with its freshness and balance – a playful rosé with subtle summer notes. Its bright pink color hints at delicate aromas of strawberries, raspberries, and wildflowers, complemented by a fine effervescence that gently tickles the palate. The taste is clean, refreshing, with a light acidity and a fruity finish – perfect for a lazy afternoon on the terrace or paired with a platter of local cheeses. A wine that doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet brings an instant smile – elegant, fresh, and authentically Slovenian.

Breakfast at Frost has its own charm – even if the ingredients are mostly the same each morning, the way they’re plated transforms it into a new experience. Each day brings a different, artful arrangement: a slice of fruit placed just so, cheese cut in a new shape, or a touch of color from fresh herbs.

It’s the kind of breakfast that shows how even simplicity can feel indulgent – when it’s served with taste and inspiration.

And if you’re a foodie, the Maribor area rewards you with excellent wines and restaurants that blend Slovenian tradition with Mediterranean influences.

The cafés in Maribor are small, charming hideaways scattered through the old town and along the Drava River. Each has its own personality – some bohemian, with vintage furniture and the scent of freshly ground coffee, others modern, serving artisanal pastries and picture-perfect lattes.

Here, time slows down, and an espresso becomes the perfect excuse to watch the city breathe gently between hills and old bridges.

In Maribor, an emblematic dessert reflecting Slovenian culinary tradition is the Prekmurska gibanica. This layered cake, protected at the European level as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed, originates from the Prekmurje region and is considered a symbol of Slovenian hospitality.

Prekmurska gibanica consists of multiple layers of thin pastry, filled with delicious mixtures of ground poppy seeds, cottage cheese (or ricotta), walnuts, and grated apples. Each layer is enriched with butter or cream, creating a rich texture and complex flavor. Though originally from eastern Slovenia, the cake is beloved throughout the country and can be enjoyed in many cafés and pastry shops in Maribor. So if you’re in the city, don’t miss the chance to taste Prekmurska gibanica – a dessert that beautifully combines tradition and authentic regional flavor.

In the heart of Maribor grows a living legend: the oldest vine in the world, over 400 years old and still bearing fruit. Planted along the Drava River, in front of what’s now the Old Vine House, this vine is a symbol of the city and of Slovenia’s passion for wine. Each year, a small quantity of red wine is produced from its grapes – a liquid story of tradition, patience, and the joy of living in harmony with nature.

For those who simply love nature, you can take a walk among the horses, go for a bike ride, or just sit on the terrace, listening to the stillness.

And because a flavorful experience deserves to last, we didn’t leave empty-handed. We took home a few treasures: bottles of wine, aromatic pumpkin seed oil, and of course, a sample of Ciril – a fine pear brandy with a velvety aroma, awarded silver at the London Spirits Awards 2024. A sip of authentic Slovenia, perfect to enjoy at home on a quiet evening, to remember the taste of the place.

The hosts at Frost were exactly as you’d hope in a place defined by true hospitality: warm, generous, and attentive to every detail. They welcomed us with smiles and made us feel like old friends, not just guests. When we left, they surprised us with a touching gesture – a miniature bottle of Ciril for our souvenir collection and a bottle of wine “for the driver,” to be enjoyed quietly at home. A simple but heartfelt detail that says everything about the spirit of the place.

Hotel Frost is the kind of place you feel, not just see. The peace, the clean air, and the bond with nature create a complete experience where modern comfort meets the authenticity of countryside life.
